The Rewilders by Lindsay Littleson follows Esme and Callum on a dangerous adventure to return a Lynx to the Wild. But it’s not as easy as that as you will find out.
Put your hand up if your Gran has ever done something a bit daft…
Mine certainly has. This one time a few years back I went to my Gran’s for a Sunday lunch, there were 6 of us all together… my Gran made 7 meals. 7 MEALS!

Anyway, ahem where was I… This doesn’t even come close to Esme’s Gran who, very kindly btw, took in an abandoned kitten. Well, at least she thought it was a kitten, and technically she was right.
But not the kind you might have at home. This was a wild Lynx! And it was growing fast!
This book isn’t even about Esme’s Gran! (I totally wish it was though).
The realisation that Gran has a Lynx only occurs when Esme (the granddaughter) has to stay with her for the weekend. And she was dreading it, her Gran didn’t even have WiFi.
Anyway Esme is presented with the task of ‘Rewilding’ the Lynx. She has help though, and it’s in the form of the ‘school bully’ Callum. Can you imagine anything worse! Well strap in because Callum has a dog named Shug aka the worst guard-dog in the world.
Esme, Callum and his dog Shug are thrust onto this perilous journey across Scotland to Rewild Cora – (That’s the Lynx. Cool name eh).
The form you have selected does not exist.
It gets off to a rocky start though as Esme and Callum do not like one another which makes for interesting ticky tacky exchanges but what could prove to be the unlikely building blocks of a friendship.
We follow the story through the eyes and thoughts of Esme and Callum and watching their relationship grow as they must learn to work together is captivating, you become emotionally invested in the unlikely pair which is a real testament to the beautiful writing in this book.
What I also like is how this book is written with the backdrop of the real-world plans to try to reintroduce Lynxses, Lynx-es 🤔 into Scotland. Here’s an article from the BBC looking into the plans of you’re interested.
Lindsay Littleson is a fantastic word-weaver, seriously. The descriptions of the landscape are honestly stunning, Scotland is one of my favourite places to visit and the really did transport me to the Highlands. I’d compare the gorgeous scenery writing to The Valley of Lost Secrets by Lesley Parr and Cranchan’s very own Joan Haig who also have the ability to transport you with words.
The underlying themes in The Rewilders are eye opening too as it looks at school bullying, peoples misconceptions towards others and animal conservation all of which are all dealt with expertly.
The publisher Cranachan has knocked it out of the park again with another talented author – Lindsay Littleson.
Do yourself a favour and buy this book. It’s heartwarming, exciting and really should be on your home or school bookshelf. And for those of you who do judge a book by its cover… look at it! Gorgeous stuff from Anne Glennie.
