I think at some point, everyone needs some Eric Carle quotes; not least to remind us, or me anyway, what it was like to be a child and how special that time actually was and is for the children in our lives now.

So it was a walloping kick in the gut hearing the news that Eric Carle has sadly passed at the age of 91. An absolute powerhouse in the world of children’s literature whose passion seeped out from every pore.

I loved Eric’s books as a child but I’m all grown up now (kind of) with children of my own and I can’t tell you how much it pleases me that I get to share his wonderful stories with them. In particular ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ and ‘Brown Bear, Brown Bear.’

With that, I wanted to share some of my favourite Eric Carle quotes. Thanks Eric, for the love of reading.

I knew even as a child that, when I grew up, I would be an artist of some kind. The lovely feeling of my pencil touching paper, a crayon making a star shape in my sketchbook, or my brush dipping into bright and colorful paints — these things affect me as joyfully today as they did all those years ago.

One day I think it’s the greatest idea ever that I’m working on. The next day I think it’s the worst that I’ve ever worked on – and I swing between that a lot. Some days I’m very happy with what I’m doing, and the next day I am desperate – it’s not working out!

We have eyes, and we’re looking at stuff all the time, all day long. And I just think that whatever our eyes touch should be beautiful, tasteful, appealing, and important.

Let’s put it this way: if you are a novelist, I think you start out with a 20 word idea, and you work at it and you wind up with a 200,000 word novel. We, picture-book people, or at least I, start out with 200,000 words and I reduce it to 20.

Simplify, slow down, be kind. And don’t forget to have art in your life – music, paintings, theater, dance, and sunsets.

On The Very Hungry Caterpillar: Quotes

You little insignificant caterpillar, can grow up into a beautiful butterfly and fly into the world with your talent. Will I be able to do that? Yes you will.

Eric Carle

The important part of books for children, or any books really, is the idea. Where does the idea come from. In the case of the caterpillar, I had an idea about a worm. So that’s the beginning of the very hungry caterpillar.

Children Need Hope.
