I’m sooooo glad to be back reviewing and I was extremely chuffed to get my hands on an early copy of Monster Doughnuts Cyclops on a Mission by Gianna Pollero! So thanks to the kind folk at Piccadilly for sending me a copy.
Annnnnd just a heads up, there’s a really cool monstrous school giveaway competition type thing. Keep reading till the end for all the details.
Let’s get straight into it…
3 Things: Mr Harris // Itchy Rash // CAKES!
Mr Harris: One of my all time favourite children’s book characters – Mr Harris – is back! And in a big way. Unlike in book 1, Mr Harris is now working for the Secret Service by Grace’s side helping to round up those pesky monsters. If only he would stop EATING them.
Itchy Rash: Yes you read that right. No, don’t worry you won’t get one by reading this book but hidden within its pages lurks the BOTTOM BITER who leaves its victims a little itchy!
CAKES!!! Is it even a children’s book if it doesn’t have cakes?
The opening line really sets the tone for the book…
“Grace yanked the tentacle out of her nose and wiped the trail of snot-like slime off her face, as she held the squirming monster at arm’s length over the bath.”
Gianna Pollero – Monster Doughnuts Cyclops on a Mission
You (and Grace) are thrown immediately into a bit of action but the layed back and a somewhat condescending Mr Harris is trying to read his magazine!

In book 1 Mr Harris was the main ‘villain’ and although he was a little bit ‘eaty’ he was hilarious and charismatic and I loved him so much! His personality pairs with Grace really well.
On one hand you have Grace who is smart, focused and likes to get down to business, (the business of hunting monsters and smooshing them with cakes) whereas Mr Harris adds twist of humour and playfulness and it works so well.
But will they be able to stop that wreched ‘Bottom Biter’ and will Mr Harris be able to stop himself EATING all the cakes and the monsters they’re supposed to be hunting.
Part of being a monster hunter working out of monster hunting HQ disguised as a family friendly bakery is to get involved in making the cakes. As it turns out Mr Harris is a pretty good baker – who knew! – so if only he would lay off eating so much…
Maybe then he wouldn’t have inadvertently sent himself back to the Monster World! Which actually turns out, was a good thing.
You’ll see why when you read the book 😉
Monster Doughnuts: Cyclops on a Mission is every bit as good as book 1 and then some. Gianna Pollero – (that time I interviewed Gianna) – has a wonderfully creative and bonkers imagination which she has used to create a unique and captivating world which is brought to life with really incredible illustrations by Sarah Horne.
Families will love this series, my kids certainly do. It’s easy to read, hilarious and has characters you’ll honestly adore. Did I mention it also has ‘Poo Shufflers’? No. Ok, it has Poo Shufflers. POO SHUFFLERS! Grrr!
If for some bizarre reason you have not read Monster Doughnuts (book 1) yet…
WHY NOT?!
Go on, put yourself on time out and think about what you’ve done. Or in this case what you haven’t done.
Finished? Ok good, now if you still need convincing go ahead and read my review of Monster Doughnuts (the first one) and immerse yourself in the imagination of Gianna from the beginning. But be careful… It’s nuts in there! And whilst you’re at it… check out my review of book 3 in the series ‘Monster Doughnuts Beastly Breakout‘ which is such a good ending to one of my favourite series.Â
If you have read the books or when you do, jump over to Twitter or Instagram and leave me a comment telling me who your favourite monster is and why. I can’t wait to hear who it is!
Happy Reading everyone 🙂
