I was kindly sent ‘The Nana Troll’ to review (thank you so much Rebecca from Instagram!) Anyway this book looked and sounded like a right hoot and I couldn’t wait to read it to my kids.
3 things about this book…
Gross-ness – I mean come on… check out those gruesomely cool illustrations by Alex Chepelev. And they perfectly match some of the descriptions of the other trolls, weird-looking pets and sometimes awful food you wouldn’t dare eat… unless your nan told you to. And wait till you see The Nana Troll getting her nail cut! Urggghhhhh.
Wild adventures – The Nana troll is always taking her Grandson on wacky outings to places like her allotment (where nothing really grows apart from stuff growing on the shed walls), paying football with his friends, and is scary good btw! Into the woods, getting into (and losing) scraps with rabbits and fixing up motorbikes.
Ugly dog – you heard right. The Nana Troll has a ‘unique’ looking dog. “We were going for a walk with her dog. Well, it’s sort of a dog, it’s very ugly and it stinks, it doesn’t look much like a dog but my Nan says it is one, so it must be.”
You may think that this book is poking a bit of fun at your nan but sometimes grandkids do have crazy thoughts about grandparents… I’m pretty sure mine were/are aliens! But you know what, I think this is a real testament to a lot of great grandparents out there.
My kids loved listening to all the descriptions and funny stories and laughed at every single picture! Especially the face of the grumpiest rabbit in a picture book you’re likely to come across.
My favourite thing about this book is how it highlights the importance and the impact of having loving grandparents who spend time with their kids/grandchildren and expose them to things they otherwise might miss out on.
Creating good memories is one of the best things we can pass down to our kids and this is exactly what I think ‘The Nana Troll’ represents. So here’s to you Kate Malloy, the original Nana Troll.
