The Wolf Wilder by Katherine Rundell

The Wolf Wilder by Katherine Rundell is a fantastic tale about a person who teaches tamed animals to fend for themselves, to fight, to run and to be wary of humans.

[I was a little entranced by this book from the outset. After the first 2 pages I knew I was going to enjoy this. Anyway…]

3 words to describe this book… Adventure, Bravery, Wolves!

Adventure – Set in snowy Russia and described beautifully, I felt like I was wondering through the landscape myself.

Bravery – Well Feo is certainly brave, I mean c’mon… She trains WOLVES how to be wild!

Wolves! – Who doesn’t like wolves?? (Maybe not if you’re a Baggie) They are majestic beasts, loyal and smart.

We follow Feo, a brave and fierce individual and to be honest, sounds totally cool. She basically has 3 wolves as besties. That’s bad-*$$ if you ask me, she can also tell the weather by the smell of the wind and can make a compass from scratch.

Feo lives with her mother and they train wolves, who have been domesticated and are now unwanted by their keepers how to be wild once again. Things begin to go wrong when the nasty General Rakov, described as being so cold “you can use his soul as a skating rink”, arrests Feo’s mother.

Of course, Feo being so couragous and loyal herself, embarks on a mission across Russia with her 3 faithful wolf friends to get her mother back. You very much feel her pain and determination, she’s going up against the Russian army and its general.

Feo does get herself into some sticky situations on the journey but makes some ‘unexpected’ friends along the way, in particular Ilya…

And you can’t help but fall in love with her wolf friends. They each have their own personalities and clearly have a deep connection with Feo. There’s a great line Feo uses about minding how you talk to a wolf, “If you talk to her like an idiot, she’ll definitely eat you.” ?

This is a really great book with some key things to remember…

“Bravery is more than being unafraid” and “cheese often gives you courage”. (Not sure what kind though, maybe seriously strong mature cheddar.)

Wow there’s a few quotes in here, (Sorry Katherine, I hope it’s ok?) but I would like to leave you all with one more which I love…
