Well let’s kick things off with 3 words… Terrifying, Adventure, Family
Terrifying – The cover alone sends shivers down my spine but what’s inside is even worse.
Adventure – We go off with Mup to save those closest to her from the chilling raggedy witches. But watch your step, it could be a trap.
Family – The strength of a loving family is vital in the fight against vile witches. (Just in-case you happen to run in to any.)
The story begins in the car, which Mup soon realises is being followed.
Now before I move on I just wanted to say that never have I read a more chilling opening to a book, it is genuinely frightening. Celine does an amazing job at putting you in the car and feeling the terror that Mup no doubt was feeling. You have been warned people.
They are being followed by the disturbing depiction of witches with piercing glaring white eyes. But why are they following Mup’s car? What do they want? Well as it happens a death in the family has sent a signal to the witches, a signal to let them know they can now take what they want. Which just so happens to be Mup’s mam (mum, mom, depending on where you’re from) Stella. But why??
Well it turns out that Stella, raised by her sister, is in fact a witch herself, unbeknown to her. And not just any witch, the heir to a magical throne! Mup’s Aunty kept her witchy ways out of it to keep her safe. But the Raggedy Witches are coming, and those powers will be needed!
The witches end up TAKING Mup’s Dad to lure out Stella. This is not good! It’s now down to Stella, Mup, Tipper (Mup’s paper brother who just so happens to have been turned into a dog) and their actual dog ‘Badger’. They must go on a rescue mission to ‘Witches Borough’ to save Dad and they will need to discover their own powers to help. Along the perilous quest they encounter great dangers and make some interest friends like the rhyming crow.
Mup is brave, determined, deeply caring and takes it to heart when people don’t do the right thing. She will need to be the driving force in the outcome of this terrifying and unfortunate situation and she won’t let anyone stand in her way.
I thoroughly loved reading this book, even if it did scare the bajeezus outta me. So if you like scary stories, definitely make this your next read.
