The Thing At Black Hole Lake by Dashe Roberts is the latest spooky installment of the Sticky Pines series. SPOILER: It’s absolutely blooming fantastic!
Ok…ok… I’ll calm down a little. I think I’d like to start with 3 words I feel describe the book well…
Hilarious, Gripping, Terrifying.
But before I begin, I’d like to start off by talking about that amazing cover! Take a bow Bill Bragg. I love the contrast of the bold yellow and chunky font on the creepy blue silhouettes of the lake and surrounding scenery. I think you will agree that it is insane and believe me, it looks even better in person.
Anyway…
The Thing at Black Hole Lake is the follow up of ‘The BigWoof Conspiracy’ (review coming soon) in the spooky town of ‘Sticky Pines’ – A place where things lurk in the woods… a place of secrets.
The book follows friends Lucy and Milo, although they still aren’t talking to each other after what happened a few weeks earlier – you’ll have to read the first book to find out what happened 🙂
We are almost thrown right into the action as Milo finds himself in terrible danger after leaving a fancy dress party early to avoid Lucy. Unbeknown to him he may need her help sooner rather than later. Milo thinks it is a good idea to take a shortcut home across Black Hole Lake in a boat which has been abandoned for some reason. When he gets about halfway across the Lake he realises that… yes… he is SINKING! And that isn’t even the worst of his problems. Something is watching him, stalking him from beneath the surface of the Lake.
I wasn’t expecting the book to be so intense this early on but the whole book is sooo well written. I felt like I was on the boat with Milo, feeling his fear and thinking I myself would fall through the sofa and get gobbled up and turned into a pile of mashed flesh and bone. It’s seriously good.
Dashe Roberts is the real deal whose skill with words had me completely mesmerised from book one showing a unique ability to make you feel utterly petrified and like you might wee a little with laughter. And all within the same sentence. This series is a cult classic in the making.
I’d also just like to say a huge thank you to Nosy Crow for sending me an early copy to review.
If you’d like to know more about Dashe, you’re in luck! She was kind enough to do an interview right here on the blog which you can read here.
