The book in 3 words: Family, Anxiety, Space
Family – A mum, 2 sisters a disappearing Dad and a Gavin. Where has the Dad gone and is Gavin to be trusted?
Anxiety – Worrying is normal and Mabel Mynt has plenty of worries, in fact, Mabel has a suitcase in her mind where she puts her worries. But it’s getting rather heavy and starting to get her down.
Space – Mabel loves Space and knows a lot about it like how we are connected to the stars because we are made of stardust. But also Mabel doesn’t know how to fill the space in her heart that Dad left when he walked out.
The story follows Mabel Mynt who lives with her older sister Topaz and Mum. Gavin (mum’s bf) pops in occasionally. Mabel has a real bond with ‘Galactic’ Gavin, he shares her love of space and is kind. ‘Galactic Gavin, has eyes that twinkle like Sirius, the brightest star in the night sky’.
Topaz on the other hand, doesn’t trust him and tries to tell Mabel what she has seen. Doubts start to set in and Mabel is torn… Gavin is her good friend but Topaz is her sister and she should listen to her. Right? She just wants to save her mother’s heart from breaking.
Mabel has been lugging around a big suitcase which she got when her Dad left. But it’s not the kind of suitcase you’re thinking of… it’s where Mabel puts all of her worries. But she worries about big things and little things and the suitcase is beginning to get real heavy, it may squash her!
Topaz has her own issues going on at home, in her mind and at school which she also keeps to herself just like Mabel. But because they don’t talk about it neither one knows how the other is struggling.
I loved this book, I found it extremely heart-warming and funny in places and it makes it clear the impact home and family life can have on your own personal and emotional well-being.
It reminds you that although someone may SEEM ok on the surface, there could be turmoil going on underneath. I guarantee there are a lot of people have their own suitcase full of worries. Including me. But let this book be a reminder that there is always someone to talk to and change doesn’t have to be scary.
This book needs to be read.
