When Alex and Ruby fall through the mirror in their aunt’s house, they find themselves in a different historical period, each time with a different task to perform before they can return to the present. From Edwardian crime capers to Victorian Christmasses, their time-slip stories are always exciting and beautifully told.

A Christmas In Time by Sally Nicholls is the second book in the ‘In Time’ series. It is a wonderful time-slip adventure which gives us a tasty glimpse into what a Victorian Christmas was like.

3 Words I would use to describe this book:

Heartwarming, Compassionate, FOOD!

The Story begins when Alex and Ruby stumble across an antique mirror in their Aunt’s house. But this isn’t just any old mirror, it’s a portal to the past! In this mirror, they can see their ancestors from a different time, and not just see them… they can step through the mirror and mingle with them, meet them, talk to them and help solve their problems.

In A Christmas in Time Alex and Ruby find themselves in the midst of Christmas stress of getting EVERYTHING ready for their B+B guests as their Aunt has, unfortunately, broke her leg. But who wants to do boring Christmas jobs like tidy the house, peel potatoes and lay the table! This sounds like the perfect opportunity to check out ‘The Mirror’ to see what magical journey they can embark on.

And they find an ancestor alright, a lady dressed in Victorian style clothing, and she seems to be looking at them! Alex and Ruby step through the mirror, a time-slip if you will, and are transported to a Victorian Christmas in 1872 in front of the lady in the mirror. And she’s so happy they’re here and of course, knows who they are! But first things first she needs to get them out of their weird modern clothes and into something a bit more ‘Victorian’ so the others in the house don’t get freaked out. Poor Ruby getting stuffed into a corset!

Is there a lady in that mirror?

Anyway, they head downstairs and are introduced to the rest of the house where they soon find out the problem they need to help solve. And boy is it a big one!! They meet Edith, who has no mother and a father who is sending her to boarding school! But Alex and Ruby have knowledge from the future and know exactly why Edith MUST NOT attend that school!

I really enjoyed this story and you will too especially if you are a fan of history and in particular the Victorians. Sally has obviously had a passion for history and you can tell by the sheer level of detail she has put in when describing things like the mouth-watering food, clothing and the homely candlelit atmosphere.

A really beautifully told story and one I was transported too almost instantly. Perfect for readers aged 7 or older who like getting the warm and fuzzies.

Buy A Christmas in Time and tell me what you think.
