3 Words to describe this book… Acceptance, Individuality, Funny
Acceptance – When you have friends who accept you for who you are, they are true friends.
Individuality – If we were all the same and dressed the same. The world would be a very boring place.
Funny – Well what else would you expect from David Walliams.
And this book is illustrated by one of the greats! Quentin Blake! My all-time favourite illustrator.
In this story we meet a boy called Dennis the top scorer on the school football team, who lives with his angry, down and out Dad who ate a “various combination of eggs, sausage, bacon, beans and chips” and not much else and an older brother who has a bad habit of picking on Dennis. Since their mother walked out it’s like the house has been plunged into depression. So much so that the Dad has banned any sign that the mother was ever there, and hugs. That’s right, banned hugs!

On top of that Dennis never felt like he could explore how he really felt until he met his friend Lisa who found out about his love of fashion! Even best friend Darvesh didn’t know this but he was afraid to tell him. Lisa gave Dennis the courage to do something he really wanted to do… wear a dress! But as you can imagine it came with some complications with some some interesting insights along the way.
This is a real enjoyable, impactful book and will mean a lot to a lot of people.
I’ll leave you with a quote…
“Rules don’t apply here,” laughed Lisa. “Dennis, you can be whoever you want to be!”
