The Great Chocoplot by Chris Callaghan

The Great Chocoplot: A Riotous Read for Chocolate-Lovers

“A cataclysmic cacao catastrophe!’ the professor spat. ‘A Chocopocalypse!”

Imagine facing the end of chocolate as we know it. Go on… try it. Finished shuddering? Good. The Great Chocoplot launches straight into this “worst case scenario” for every snack-loving reader. It’s laugh-out-loud, properly British chaos with a generous helping of heart, winks for pop-culture nerds (myself), and more snack-based puns than you can shake a Kit-Kat at.

The Great Chocoplot: The Crisis, the Characters, the Chocolate

Meet Jelly Wellington (yes, named like a dessert), our lovable, scientifically-minded heroine in Chompton-on-de-Lyte, where the streets ‘Bittersweet Street‘, ‘Cookie Way‘ sound good enough to eat. When a telly “prophecy” warns that all chocolate will disappear in six days, Chompton (and the whole of Britain) melts down faster than a Flake in a sauna. People panic-shop, stockpile the ECS (Emergency Chocolate Stash), and self-diagnose with “a-lotta-choca-litis” the only real pandemic I’d sign up for.

Jelly, fuelled by curiosity and a stubborn streak, teams up with her gran (possessor of the legendary chocolate drawer) and dives into the mystery to take on the absolutely dreadful… Garibaldi Chocolati! (who, by the way, totally looks like the hunter from Jumanji).

Want to know more about the mind behind the madness? Don’t miss my interview with Chris Callaghan part of the Getting to Know series here on Stoomio, where we dig into chocolate, characters, and how The Great Chocoplot came to life.

My Quick Take

The Great Chocoplot is a riot. Funny, punny, and sneakily clever. It serves up a high-energy mix of mystery, madness, and one girl’s logical battle against full-blown national meltdown. You’ll laugh, snack, and probably hug your biscuit tin a little tighter.

What makes The Great Chocoplot so tasty

  • Sweet & Geeky Worldbuilding:
Place names are all carefully crafted puns. Some towns get history… Chompton gets chocolate.
  • Outrageously Treat-ified Names:
Jelly, Sir Walter Waffle, Garibaldi Chocolati. Everyone sounds like they snuck out of Willy Wonka’s HR department.
  • Running Gags & References:
Keep your eyes peeled: Sultan of Swang (hello, Dire Straits fans), a hobbit-flavoured nod, and a not-so-secret hope that #askchocprof works on real Twitter.
  • Community Madness:
What starts as “concern” quickly mushrooms into absolute “chococalypse,” with ration bars and neighbourly negotiations over blocks of chocolate.

Big Themes

  • Dealing with Worry (and Finding Strength):
Jelly’s no stranger to anxiety. Her solutions involve curiosity, experimentation, and family support. It’s honest, comforting, and, let’s be real, refreshingly uncheesy.
  • The Ripple Effect of Rumour
Sharp satire on dodgy news, public panic, and how one strange story can spiral into full-blown frenzy.
  • Enjoy, Don’t Worship:
“Chocolate isn’t something to worship… it’s something to enjoy.”

Quotes Worth Savouring

  • “Chocolate isn’t something to worship – it’s something to enjoy.”
  • “Don’t worry about tomorrow – enjoy today.”
  • “The Chocopocalypse is coming! And on that bombshell, back to the studio to find out why dogs dream and cats don’t …”
  • “A cataclysmic cacao catastrophe!’ the professor spat. ‘A Chocopocalypse!”
  • “You can’t stop worrying about something just because someone tells you to stop worrying. Even if you want to stop, it doesn’t mean you can. To be told that she was always worrying made her think she did worry too much, and this worried her even more.”

Who Is This Book For?

The Great Chocoplot Perfect for ages 8+ and anyone with a sweet tooth and a sense of humour. Great for:

  • Kids who get anxious but love a heroine who tackles it with science and biscuits.
  • Grown-ups who remember the panic-buying days of 2020 a bit too well.
  • Readers who enjoy fast-paced, pun-packed chaos with heart.
  • Parents and teachers will appreciate the layered gags like the E.C.S., “a-lotta-choca-litis,” and all the subtle pop-culture shout-outs.

Any Downsides?

Honestly? Not many. But if we’re being picky:

  • Characters sometimes lean into full-on cartoon mode, but it’s part of the fun.
  • The relentless pace and zany asides could flummox fans of quieter tales. But for choc-fuelled readers, it’s heaven.
