First off, tell us a little about yourself…
I’m a mum of four children aged 2-14, who are all home-schooled, and I write stories around the edges of the day.
Tell us about The Girl Who Speaks Bear…
The Girl Who Speaks Bear is about a girl found in a bear cave, who embarks on a journey to discover where she truly belongs.

Were you good at writing at school?
I enjoyed writing at school, and I kept a few of the stories I was most proud of. But I loved science more, and I became a scientist, and worked as one until I had children in my thirties. That’s when I started to write creatively again.
What was your favourite book as a child?
The Moomins. The mix of whimsy and philosophy is a perfect balm for my soul.
What was it that inspired you to become a writer?
My children. I started writing stories purely to share with them.
Has a book ever made you cry? What was it?
So many books have made me cry! Literally hundreds. Most recently it was Sing, Unburied, Sing.
What is your writing Kryptonite?
Twitter!
Have you ever gotten reader’s block?
Not really, because if I don’t have the focus for a full novel, I will read short stories or poetry collections.
What did you do with your first paycheck?
With my first book advance, I bought a piece of art by Melissa Castrillon, who illustrated the cover for my first published book. It now hangs above my writing desk and I adore it.
As a writer, what would you choose as your mascot/avatar/spirit animal?
My eldest son tells me my spirit animal is a flamingo, although I always felt it would be a sea turtle, calm and steady. I try to channel my inner, ruthless weasel during edits though.
How many unpublished and half-finished books do you have?
About seven unpublished novels. I think of them as my apprenticeship work.
What does literary success look like to you?
Simply a book you are proud of writing, one that invokes emotion when you read it.
Do you Google yourself?
No.
And most importantly… What is your favourite biscuit?
All of them, except the nutty ones.
